Welcome
Welcome to Oxford Wine Tasting notes! I've finally entered the
technological age and realised my tasting notes might be more use to
other people rather than just gathering dust in my study. Enjoy reading
them and please explore the links below.
My
wine tasting notes use the 20-point scale. I'm not a huge fan of
grading wines; it is a crude way of summarising something that amounts
to much more than a numerical score. The subjectivity, variability and
lack of reproducibility are for debate elsewhere. But I appreciate that
some means of conveying relative quality is required, hence I adopted
the traditional 20-point scale of the English wine trade.
To help
calibrate this: for me, a score of 15 equates to a good wine I'd be
happy to enjoy with dinner on a week night. But I like what I like, and
so should you.
These scores are absolute rather than relative i.e. I don't specifically factor price into the score.
Biography
Passionate about wine, Ed Fitzgerald was President of Oxford University Wine Society (OUWS) from 2000-2002 whist studying medicine at Magdalen
College. Hosting over 40 of the world's most famous wineries and winemakers
during this period, he gained a unique exposure to the world of wine from an
early age. His passion continued to grow and was rewarded as one of the winners
of the University Wine Challenge in 2002 with a trip to the Australian Wine
Trade Fair in Sydney provided by the Australian Wine Marketing Board. Following
this he was invited to act as a Judge at the annual International
Wine Challenge in London, the world's largest wine competition.
His relaxed and informal style makes him a popular speaker, regularly
providing fun and informative wine tastings for interested groups. Edward
still remains closely involved with OUWS and hosts their Beginners' Classes, run
in Michaelmas and Hilary term each year. Over a decade of experience in this
area have given him a wealth of knowledge and anecdotes to share with tasters
and these events are always sold-out.
Having passed both his Wine & Spirit Education Trust Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3) Certificates with Distinction, he is working towards advanced professional wine qualifications and continues to travel widely, exploring the
world's wine regions.
